   Amen. I’ve had to live a life where I’m supposed to be ashamed to be white. We are taught from such a young age that we are terrible, terrible people that have done wrong since the beginning of time. Everyone else is an innocent victim. So amen!

   History documents scores of conquered peoples who were most certainly unfairly treated. In fact, most were integrated into their conquering societies and were not given the opportunity to co-exist.

   I can think of no other group of people other then the North American Indian that continues to whine and cry and ask for handouts and restitution.

   My previous comment is “awaiting moderation” and I don’t expect it to be approved for publication. I would like to take a moment to express my deeply felt frustration at comments such as this post and four of the five replies that preceded mine. I’m too busy at the moment to reply at length, but I’ve bookmarked this page and I intend to reply at the earliest possible opportunity. Hopefully my original comment will be posted, I’m not ashamed at having used harsh language, but in case it doesn’t make the cut… I’m extremely irate. And am only consoled by the fact that there are, so far, only a smattering of replies in support from people that clearly have little or no understanding of the aboriginal experience to say nothing of their own history. blah blah blah, like i say. i’ll get back to this page.

   First of all, approximately 40% of native canadians (not including metis or inuit) are not considered to be “Status Indians” as defined by the Indian Act, and it’s the Status part that entitles them to certain exemptions and benefits.
   Secondly, there are a lot of white people who are considered to be Status Indians; prior to 1985 if a native man married a non-native woman, she would inherit the indian status, so we do have a lot of status indians who have absolutely no native blood! In contrast, when a native woman married a non native man she was stripped of the Status and so too were her offspring.

   As for tax exemptions and benefits, yes Status Indians are exempt from paying income tax if they work on-reserve, any income made off the reserve is taxable income just like everyone else’s. and the benefits are the run of the mill insurance plans, for instance dental is 80% preventative treatments, 50% on major, but speaking as a native canadian I think there should be a Gov’t subsidized dental plan for all canadians because teeth are important and expensive!

   Yes education is paid for, but not everything, too many details to go into right now, and certain requirements have to be met to receive this type of funding. Besides, Education on reserve is a joke, the majority white teachers really don’t care to be there and don’t really teach the kids anything so don’t worry not very many of us are going to university.

   Finally,there is no due course when dealing with Indian Affairs, like with other gov’t agencies, have you ever had to wait 150 years for a social insurance card??? or 10 years for your EI to kick in? Hence the roadblocks. and anytime there is to be economic development on reserves, Indian Affairs swoops in to gum up the works. We weren’t even granted citizenship and were not allowed to vote until 1960.

   Anyways, I really could go on and on educating you on the things you obviously know nothing about, but know this, when you see an indian and resent him for breathing, just remember, there’s a 40% chance you are 100% wrong.

   I am sad to see that eventhough there has been so much progress in race relations, that so much stays the same. I can’t believe that people still cry around and print racist crap. The person who is writing about this crap is obviously uninformed and generalizing about issues he/she knows nothing about. I am native american who the government didn’t recognize as a native american until the government magically made me an indian at age 13 (1983. I pay my taxes, and I work, and my medical is payed by personal health plan because IN
   ac(indian and northern affairs Canada) don’t cover crap. The majority of natives work off reserve and are similar to my situation. As for the free education, I would love to have my student loans paid for. Perhaps you could spend your time more positively and help myself and thousands of other people in the country cut the cost of tuition, so that we can have affordable education. It would be much more productive than the poor arguement that you are trying to make against the natives of this country.

    Also, there are thousand of white people who make huge amounts of money and because of creative accounting don’t pay taxes.

    Furthermore, the vast majority of money that goes to reserves end up in the hands of one or two wealth families, who funnel the money into jobs that pay ridicuously high wages to them and their family members, in some cases these people are at least 3/4 white. and native people have NO recourse such as access to and ombudsman or a local judicial system where they can appeal these kind of activities.

    This is just a continuation of colonial mentallity that has messed up 3/4 of the countries of the world, find a country whose resourses you want, appoint a local manipulable leader, fund him in the name of “aide” and allow him to create a dynasty that will go on forever, examples: Shaw of Iran, Idi Amin, Saddam Hussein, Sukarno, Ferdinand Marcos, Peron, Papadoc Duvalier and babydoc Duvalier and countless other banana republics who survive on western foreign aid and subjugate their citizens or their people by using their funding to build power.

    Talk is cheap when you are tunnel-visioned. When one is making comments. seek reality from biased opinions. Deal with the knowledge of reality. To live together we have to sit. really hear and understand what each other is saying. Being native teaches the understanding that God put everything on this earth to fulfill a certain role and initiate a reason to continue the evolutionary survival of all the things on the earth. This clashes the Old World Cultural Ttraining. As Keepers of the Earth it is our duty to keep things as natural as possible.Everything is placed to work with and maintain a balance with each living thing it touches. Old World naintains one to meet, dcibquor, divide or exterminate if the conquored is unwilling to blend in.They also taught the strong est ruleds and owns all. Is it any wonder our cultures grind. As for the government giving us everything gree. Didn’t you ever wpmder why there are som many natives in the city Drunk high, homeless. Before I can get a house i have tp pay for a lot, have #1500 down before I can get a house. Rig

    A significant number of replies that document all of the problems faced by the native people. Not one noting how this can be rectified as part of a joint effort amongst Canadians.

    From my first post – “Equality across the board”. Equality doesn’t mean without problems – it just means everyone gets screwed equally.

    Is that too much to ask?
