Justice Marion Cohen who oversees administration for the Ontario Court of Justice at 311 Jarvis St., ordered a small artificial Christmas tree, decked out in lights and ornaments, moved to an administrative corridor on Monday. In a letter to staff, she said it is a Christian symbol that might alienate people of other creeds and cultures.
It’s not the first Christmas tree to come under fire this season. Fourteen Christmas trees were removed from the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport earlier this month after a rabbi threatened to sue for not displaying a menorah.
What’s up with the Judge? Doesn’t she think we have enough trouble in this city where we kowtow to every minority going? I mean, if there is a better symbol of peace on earth and goodwill towards all men (ok, and women - remember political correctness) then show it to me. The Dove with Olive branch in beak comes to mind but its had its scrawny little ass blown off by more Muslims, Jews and for that matter Christians, then any other animal on the face of the planet - so its bye bye birdie for that symbol.
The Rabbi kind of had the right idea in that I think he was asking for equal time, that is, could a Menorah be placed somewhere alongside the tree. Hey, I’m ok with that. But he had to go and screw it up by issuing the ’sue’ threat, the litigious little bastard. Probably has a brother-in -law that’s a lawyer.
We, meaning Christians, must be the meekest religious group on earth. I mean, if a XMAS tree was a Muslim tradition there’d be a Jihad already started. Every fucking Santa and Reindeer set from every lawn in Toronto would be hostage now with one being beheaded every night unless every damn tree was returned from Guantanamo Bay.
Quit looking out for everyone else’s rights and start looking out for some of my, and hundreds of thousands of other Christians’ rights. Leave my fucking XMAS trees alone!
First off, lets not forget that the Christmas Tree is a symbol of the time of year, not a religious symbol. It must be nice to have the ability to complain about the symbols that others fought so hard to keep the right to complain by giving of their lives. If everyone forgets about the fact that they are only allowed to complain because we are a free society, then maybe they should give up on the religious symbols and just say thanks. Thanks for being able to bitch, and leave it at that.
holy shit. i could not agree more. i read that in the paper and i saw red. although this judge did say the big ass tree in t.o. a few years back would be called a christmas tree, and not a “holiday” tree. so good job. but this is just insanity. oh heaven forbid we offend someone!! what about offending the millions who DO celebrate the holiday? you know its sad times when a company displays the words “merry christmas” (and not happy holidays), and it is interpreted as “sticking it to ‘em.” leave my fucking tree alone indeed. what kind of asshole gets offended by a tree anyway? if its not your thing, accept that it is other people’s “thing” and move on.
So if you don’t want to permit the Christmas Tree, or Merry Christmas, because it may offend someone, too FUCKING BAD to YOU! Let us not forget that this country was founded by Christian cultures. As best I can remember my CANADIAN history, this country was settled by European countries, mainly of English and French descent. And by the way let’s remind the PROVINCE of Quebec that the French LOST the war, you want to belong to a French NATION go back to FRANCE. But, I digress, that is a whole other rant. Getting back to the Christmas Tree, it’s damn well about time Canadians get off their laise faire (thought I’d throw some french in there) asses and start sticking up for OUR culture, before we no longer HAVE a culture because we are so afraid of hurting someone elses feelings!! You chose to come to Canada for all it is, including celebrating Christian holidays. I don’t hear any Jewish, Muslim, Athiests, Gay, French or anyone else complaining about having the day off work on Dec 25 and 26, or Good Friday, or Easter Monday. If you don’t like our Christmas Tree, too Fucking Bad. Let’s cancel Hannukah, Carabana, Chinese New Year, Gay Parade, and every other damn thing in the world. Canada has always been about RESPECTING the beliefs of others. We’re not asking anyone to convert to Christianity, just RESPECT the traditions on which our country was founded and grew up with. Just as we Canadians respect every other groups right to celebrate their beliefs. Why not LEARN about other cultures rather than beat them down. I have learned more about other peoples traditions and beliefs by asking each person I know what their culture does for each holiday, it’s fascinating, try it sometime. And in the mean time, I agree with Steve, LEAVE MY FUCKING CHRISTMAS TREE ALONE!!!!!
There’s nothing jovial about going to jail, I think the Christmas Tree or Pagan tree (whatever you want to call it), should be removed.
The other religious leaders said that the judge was out of line. The muslim representative stated that political correctness should be banned, not Christmas trees.
I say we give up on this “Christmas” idea since it seems to be offending everyone and their mother, and we all gather around the festivus pole!!! Festivus for the rest of us!!!!
Happy Festivus everyone.
Okay, I’ve totally had it with political correctness. I thought we dealt with this shit in the 80’s. Yet, I’ve seen countless examples of political correctness being totally out-of-control this year. Every Christmas it’s the same damn thing.
Some idiot has a problem (usually for religious reasons) with a Christmas tree or Christmas carol, or decoration or whatever else and complains. In response the retailer, employer or whoever ends up totally over-reacting and every mention of “Christmas” is removed/banned. Every symbol of Christmas is torn down. Employers tell their employees to say “Happy Holidays” instead of “Merry Christmas”. We trash hundreds of years of universally accepted tradition without even worrying about it. It makes me insane.
When will the world stop catering to the wishes of the complainers? Sadly, those who make the most noise almost always get their way. It’s the-squeaky-wheel-gets-the-oil school of customer service. Employers are so scared of being sued, that rather than try to placate the complainers in another way, they simply cave to the demands… and Christmas is slowly eroded/rusted away as a result. Unfortunately, this is also the way our governments work. Special Interest groups, religious groups and focus groups get their agendas pushed through because they make a lot of noise. It doesn’t matter if the HUGE MAJORITY disagrees.
Every Christmas it gets worse and worse. Eventually it’s going to be illegal to say “Merry Christmas”. Someday, far in the future, we’ll all celebrate ‘December Holiday’. The festivities will consist of people wishing each other ‘Happy Holidays’, and a big safe generic meal like a salad. That’s it. All the rest will be gone since it is so offensive.
The part that makes me the craziest is that I am NOT religious. I don’t believe in God, Satan, Buddha, David Koresh, Zeus or whatever the fuck else anyone believes in. Christmas is a CULTURAL tradition for me. It has value and meaning to me, and NOT for religious reasons. I am NOT a Christian. So don’t tell me that the Christmas Tree offends you because of it’s religious symbolism. It’s not a religious symbol, it’s a cultural symbol.
People, please learn to tolerate other customs, cultures and religions. I’m non-religious, but you don’t see me freaking out whenever someone says “Merry Christmas”, “Happy Hanukkah” or “Happy Quanza” to me. I simply respond in kind.
But I’ll tell you this much… if this political correctness shit keeps up, I’ll change my responses to one universally accepted one.
Salesperson: “Hi, Happy Holidays”
Glen’s Response: “Hi, Fuck You!”
I’m sure Judge Cohen discussed this at length with her peers before issuing the mandate… probably while noshing on latkes.
I think it is about time that the majority stood up against the minority. I am all for religious freedom, however, Canadian culture has been based on Christianity. Unfortunately, our rights are being eroded by the minority, and it is hurting our society. Prayers and Christmas Carols are no longer allowed in public schools. You can no longer discipline children, and what has happened? In the past 30 years, our society has become so violent…why, because we are allowing the goodness of this country to be eroded by the minority. Many of these people are immigrants who came to our country for a better life. Now that they are here with the freedoms this country grants, they are slowly taking our way of life away from us. We have to stop this!! We have to be tolerant of each other and each other’s customs and religions. Please don’t take anymore away from us.
We are all here as immigrants somewhere down the line. Maybe we shouldn’t be throwing stones since our ancestors did gather all the natives and place them in reserves.. just a thought
Saying Merry Christmas is saying have a good day (Christmas Day). How can we have world peace if were offended by someone wishing us to have a good day?
In conclusion, fuck islam.
Wow, what an issue! These acts of Canadian social pandering always irk me…Proctor and Gamble, in Hamilton, cancelled the gift of Turkey/Ham for it’s employees due to complaints by Muslims vis-a-vis ham. It wasn’t enough that the company offered an option, this minority of workers didn’t want ANY ham on the premises…P&G sacked the whole campaign. Lot’s of other workers looked forward to recieving this gift of Turkey/Ham because it augmented their Christmas expenses (turkey can get pricey).
Now, in my humble opinion, this false sense of entitlement based on religious tenet offends me. We as a nation do not demand any group forsake the folkways and morays of their respective culture; that is what we stand for, that is a fundament of democracy…not to inflict personal lifestyle demands on others, regardless of how we may or may not approve. If we truly abide by this then why do we acquiesce to the chirping of an oversensitive, hyper-reactive minority?
Don’t approve of Ham? Don’t work for P&G…lot’s of other jobs around.
Don’t approve of Christmas Trees? Find them ‘offensive’? Close your bloody eyes! Don’t frequent the heathen shops flouting the evil Tannenbaum! In Canada, you do not have to like the customs and traditions of others, it’s a beautiful thing.
You are expected, as are the rest of us, to be TOLERANT.
If you think that you ‘have the right’ to work at ham holding corporations, or you ‘have the right’ to shop wherever you damn well feel, then find a way to reconcile the customs with your life. Christmas trees and ham were here before you, and other people like them…and they ‘have the right’ as well.
You wouldn’t see me stepping off of an airplane in a Muslim state decked out in Daisy Dukes and a bra top swilling beer belching “Fuck” simply because I’m a Canadian and I have the right to do that if I want to…
Respect, man.
Respect.
